EPHI Leadership Demonstrates Strong Commitment to Strengthening Sub-National Public Health Institutes

WORABE (Central Ethiopia) – May 19, 2025 (NIPN/EPHI) - The Ethiopian Public Health Institute (EPHI) declared its willingness to support  sub-national public health institutes. Deputy Director General (DDG) of the EPHI, Dr. Getachew Tollera, said here yesterday in a consultative meeting with leadership members of the Central Ethiopia Regional Public Health Institute (CEPHI) that EPHI is duty-bound to support CEPHI in its efforts to improve performance in the health sector.

“We appreciate the initiatives taken by the CEPHI to conduct research with limited human and financial resources. EPHI, with its extensive experience in research, public health emergency, laboratory capacity building, and data management, can provide valuable support for such efforts,” Dr. Getachew said.

The DDG stated that CEPHI is expected to establish a close relationship with EPHI and benefit from the experiences of the senior researchers, laboratory technicians, and public health experts.

On the occasion, Dr. Getachew handed over to the General Director of CEPHI two laptop computers and two Wi-Fi access points (wireless routers), which were donated by the National Information Platform for Nutrition-Ethiopia (NIPN-Ethiopia). He also announced that the Nutrition, Environmental Health, and Non-Communicable Disease Research Directorate (NEHNCDRD) of EPHI would be ready to donate office furniture and other essential materials for researches.

After receiving the donation of laptop computers and Wi-Fi access points, the General Director of CEPHI, Mr. Mamush Hussien, said that establishing a relationship with EPHI gives CEPHI a big opportunity. “The initiative taken by EPHI leadership to support CEPHI inspires us to work harder. The donation is meaningful to us. A laptop computer is a luxury item for a newly established institute like CEPHI. We appreciate the commitment of the EPHI leadership and the support greatly.” Mr. Mamush said.

Dr. Masresha Tessema, director of NEHNCDRD at EPHI, said on the occasion that EPHI would continue supporting CEPHI. More support, including gadgets like computers and servers, is coming from EPHI, according to him. “We are ready to provide support in capacity building through our NIPN project. Important training components, such as Grant Writing and Data Management, can be offered to researchers at CEPHI. We are ready to do that in the near future,” he stated.

Earlier, Dr. Sinafikish Ayele, Director of Health Research and Technology Transfer at CEPHI, briefed the EPHI leadership about the performances of her institute. She said that CEPHI, structured into three directorates, is serving over seven million people residing in seven zonal and three Woreda administrations. (NIPN/EPHI).
